Team Houston

Team Houston is a closed group for Project Week, a stellar group of girls who are determined, driven, perseverant, independent and committed to community service. During Project Week 15 Fenway female students will travel to Houston, Texas to assist the St. Bernard Project in rebuilding the Northeast Houston Area in the wake of Hurricane Harvey devastation. Students will learn to lead through service and engage in fun community and leadership building activities as well as college tours.

 

Rawr, Squeek, Chirp: The Animal Lovers Club

Do you love animals? If so, join this awesome group, where we will be exploring the animals in our community and beyond! We will be taking field trips to local organizations and gaining hands on experience.

 

#Time’sUp – Take a Stand Fenway

Are you tired of waiting for the next #Metoo scandal to break out? Are you concerned about sexual harassment and assault? Do you want to do something about it? 1 in 3 women ages 18 to 34 have been sexually harassed at work. 71% said they didn’t report it. No more silence. No more waiting. #Timesup! Come to MassCOSH and become trained in skills to combat sexual harassment in the workplace. Bring your facilitation and leadership skills back to Fenway and train your teachers and peers so we can stand in solidarity and make our school, workplaces and community safer, stronger, and more just. To combat this, we need both young men and women to take action. Join us in the fight for equality!

 

The Chemistry of Food

Have you ever wondered why salt is applied to the streets in the winter time?  Are you wondering what this has to do with food? Come find out as we explore not only the delicious bites around the city, but also the chemistry behind the food. This will be a hands on experience as we create treats in our food-lab, meet and eat with people in the food industry, and examine our food knowledge. Your taste buds (and your brain) will thank you.

 

RECORDING ARTS

Do you want to learn about the music industry? Do you enjoy expressing yourself through writing and/or visual Arts? Join the Music Recording Group where we will go through the process of creating musical entertainment just like your favorite artists. From your notepad to your iPad, collaborating with some of your peers, you will write your own lyrics, record in a music studio, and develop visual content to go along with your new hit single. No musical experience is necessary, you need just a desire to be creative, learn, and work.

 

Dance!  Music and Dance of the African Diaspora

Come and experience music and dance influenced by the birthplace of mankind.  Travel with us from Africa to various parts of the globe to discover the impact African rhythms have had on music and dance around the world. Play African drums, learn Negro spirituals, explore jazz and the blues, and learn hip hop, as well as African and Caribbean dances.

 

Mindfulness

Is life stressing you out? Was your new year’s resolution to be more chill this year? Then join Fenway’s Mindfulness group! We are going to look at things we can do to be more present in our day to day lives and how we can interact more mindfully with our friends, family, and teachers. We will be doing yoga, meditating, coloring, and learning about things we can do throughout the day to stay calm. Bring all your energy and come learn how to channel it mindfully!

 

Sports Fitness

Do you like working out, playing sports, or enjoy being fit? If so this is the group for you! Students will participate in different activities, exercises, and training at different facilities in the Boston area. Students will also get to meet and learn different exercises from different certified trainers. So bring your “A” game get ready to sweat!!!!

 

Get Hooked!

Learn the basics of freshwater and saltwater fishing throughout eastern MA in lakes, ponds, canals and the harbor. Fishing included!

 

Color Your World

Want to leave your mark on Fenway? How about your mark on Fenway’s WALLS? With Color Your World, you will work with your peers and professional artists to design and paint two new murals (paintings) on walls in the school building. Be prepared to share your ideas, take creative risks, and get your hands dirty!

 

Baking

Do you love to eat? Are you curious to learn how tasty baked goods are made? This group will visit different kitchens and explore various types of baked goods. No cooking experience needed; just an open mind and a big appetite.

 

Brilliant Career Lab

Have you ever wondered what different engineers do or what it’s like to design and develop video games? Have you ever wanted to program, use a 3-D printer, or laser cutter? If so, join us! In this group, we’ll explore these questions (and more!) with the help of the mobile GE Brilliant Career Lab, where you will have the chance to interact and innovate with high-tech equipment.

 

Thinking in 3 Dimensions

Do you want to share your creative genius with others? Join our group in designing and constructing a three dimensional artwork celebrating the value of what it means to be human. The final piece will be installed at Fenway High! We will tour the Rose Kennedy Greenway with a Boston community artist discovering the impact of public art in Boston.  We will spend two days at a local art studio designing and creating our sculpture that we will install at Fenway on our final afternoon together.

 

Health: The Youth Navigator

The program will educate and empower Fenway students in areas related to sexual health, healthy relationships, and STI/pregnancy risk reduction. The goal is for students participating in the program to be able to act as ambassadors for their peers for the rest of the school year and to help them to access STI testing services in the school through the HRC. If you like making sure people are making healthy choices sign up for the Youth Navigator Initiative!

Everyone has a story to tell… they’re just waiting to share it with someone! Join in understanding the power of images and storytelling as we explore the city. We will collaborate with professional photographers and editors to take photos of fellow students, Fenway families, and local business owners. We’ll print photos and compile them all using a hashtag or Instagram page to share our stories with the world.

 

Stories on Stage

Have you felt, over the past year or so, that you don’t belong? Have you felt attacked by words in the news that seem to degrade you or your family? You matter. Your words matter. Your stories matter. Join this group to learn how to write and perform poetry/story slams, use other art forms (like visual and movement arts) to enhance your writing, and use your voice to remind Fenway and America that you belong here. We will be writing and creating art all over the city of Boston, including at GrubStreet’s Writing Center downtown. Join us!

 

History Detectives

Are you interested in discovering more about the history of Boston? Want to dig through history to discover the real story of the people? Do you like solving mysteries? Join us as we dig (literally) for history, learn what it means to be a historian, and discover for ourselves the people behind the history books.

 

The World Behind the Scenes

Have you ever wondered what happens behind the scenes in a television studio? Or maybe wondered about how news becomes reality in print? What about the systems and controls that make communication happen from a radio station? Well, for the very first time a group of students will have an opportunity to explore different ways of communication in our community. Join us in touring local TV networks, radio stations and a newspaper facility as we learn and make our own mark. At the end, our group will create a professional video at the BNN studio to present during our closing ceremony. Are you ready?!

 

Fenway City Cyclists

Do you like to ride bicycles?  Could you imagine riding a bike around Boston, but you are afraid to navigate the traffic?  Could you imagine using your bike to explore some areas outside Boston? Do you wish you knew how to fix your bike?  You should join Fenway City Cyclists! Biking is a great way to get around Boston. It’s often the fastest way to get around too.  There are tons of bike paths and its possible to bring your bike on buses, subways and the commuter rail. We’ll spend our week outside, biking around the city and may even take a trip outside of Boston.  We’ll also go over some basic bike safety and bike maintenance so you can feel confident. If you have a bike, you can bring it, but no bike is required. Come feel the power of the pedal!

 

Strong Men = Strong Communities

Male Mentorship Group: Building Relations Beyond Fenway

During Project Week, selected male students from Fenway High will be introduced to successful, relevant, and knowledgeable professional males, community role models, and mentors throughout the city of Boston. Students will share their experiences and connect and build relationships with professionals of similar backgrounds for inspiration and mentorship. Additional activities include: community service projects, sports games, luncheons, and college/university engagements, besides connecting with professionals throughout the Greater Boston area.

 

MAKE AND FLY KITES WITH US!

Workshop with a well-known kite specialist and author of many books on kiting.  Build assorted kites with free and recycled materials. Fly kites at local parks and beaches.  This project week is very hands on and requires patience building kites and a love of the outdoors.  Both beginning and experienced kite makers are welcome!

 

Craft Party – Arts & Crafts

Come join us for a few days of art, crafts, and fun! Come learn to sew, paint, draw, color, and sculpt your way through the week and visit various art-based places in Boston. Everyone has an artistic side and it’s time to let it shine!! Can’t wait to see what you create!

 

Custom Auto Design

Do you enjoy cars, rims, and big speakers? This group will get up close and provide personal contact with high-end cars and meet the mechanics and automotive owners behind the machines. Students will explore the automotive industry around the city of Boston.

 

Hiking

4 Days, 40 Miles Hiking (Overnight – Advanced Sign Up Required) – Explore the great outdoors in Western Massachusetts! Travel across the state and spend three nights at Swann Lodge, a rustic cabin in the woods, then be outside every day (rain or shine) for short and long hikes in the Berkshire Mountains.  Learn the basics of day hiking including mapping and compass readings.  Expect to engage in community building activities and plenty of physical exercise.  Come prepared to “Try It On.”  There is a travel fee for this trip, which could be as high as $50.00, but we will attempt to raise funds.
